Nigerian chess queen Deborah Quickpen is awed by her meteoric rise in the game and thrilled to represent the country at the upcoming World Chess Olympiad in Hungary alongside her coach and mentor, Bomo Kigigha.
Quickpen, who is currently representing Nigeria in the Girls 12 at the Chess World Cup in Georgia, shared her excitement in an Instagram post on Tuesday, expressing gratitude to the man who introduced her to the game at three.
“That my mentor, Nigerian chess legend Bomo Kigigha, and I will play in the same tournament, representing Nigeria at the World Chess Olympiad in Hungary, is a dream come true. Coach Kigigha introduced me to chess at the age of three and believed in me, and today we’ll be doing the country proud together on the same team. You have no idea how fulfilling this is!
“Thank you, sir. And yes, Bayelsa State will have four chess players in the Nigeria contingent to the World Chess Olympiad in Hungary: Bomo Kigigha, Suleiman Azumi, Enomah Emmanuella, and Deborah Quickpen (wildcard),” stated the Quickpen, who recently took on Guinness World Record holder Tunde Onakoya in a marathon game termed ‘Battle of the Ages’.
